Guided Walking Holidays: The Great Glen Way - Detailed Itinerary

Overnight accommodation in Fort William.

Day 1: Fort William to Gairlochy - 10½ miles/17km

This magnificently scenic National Trail sets out from the historic Old Fort in Fort William under the glorious shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. The Great Glen Way meanders out of town joining the beautiful shores of Loch Linnhe which in turn lead to the beginning of the historic Caledonian Canal. The Great Glen Way follows the tree-lined towpaths of the canal passing the beautiful Neptune’s Staircase and the impressive aqueduct before reaching our night’s accommodation in Gairlochy.

Day 2: Gairlochy to South Laggan - 12 miles/19km

Leaving Gairlochy, the trail cuts temporarily away from the canal and welcomes the shores of Loch Lochy. The route then follows fragrant forest tracks along the western shores of the Loch set against a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery including two ‘Munros’. The Great Glen Way rejoins the canal once again at Laggan Locks, close to the site of the Clan Battle of The Shirts in 1544, and continues on to our night’s accommodation in South Laggan.

Day 3: South Laggan to Fort Augustus - 10½ miles/17km

From South Laggan, The Great Glen Way reaches the secluded shores of Loch Oich. The Great Glen Way follows the Loch, first along an old railway line disused since 1946, then along historic General Wade’s Military Road passing beautiful woodland. At Aberchalder, the trail rejoins the canal towpath until in sight of historic Fort Augustus, our night’s accommodation, and home of the grand, impressive Abbey.

Day 4: Fort Augustus to Invermoriston - 8miles/13km

Leaving Fort Augustus, the Great Glen Way begins its first real climb, rewarding with truly stunning, panoramic views towards Loch Ness and the east coast of Scotland. The trail follows a series of forest tracks before crossing the mighty river Moriston over a splendid bridge designed by Thomas Telford, and in to the village of Invermoriston, and our night’s accommodation.

Day 5: Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit - 14 miles/22km

The Great Glen Way leaves Invermoriston with a steep climb up the forest tracks towards the crofting community of Grotaig. Now high above Loch Ness, the views are again far reaching and glorious. The route passes more crofting land before descending through verdant woodland to the River Collie and our night’s accommodation in the bustling settlement of Drumnadrochit. This is the famous starting point of trips to find the elusive ‘Nessie’ on vast Loch Ness.

Day 6: Drumnadrochit to Inverness - 18 miles/29km

This is the final day of the Great Glen Way which promises to be another wonderful days walking in this majestic highland setting. Leaving Drumnadrochit, the trail climbs steadily out of the village through woodland rewarding with great views back to the village and the shores of the Loch. From here, the impressive ramparts of Urquhart Castle are visible, set against a beautiful backdrop of the distant Moray Firth on the Scottish coast. The terrain now changes to a pleasant trail across heather-clad moorland through more ancient crofting communities. The trail emerges at Craig Leach forest and reservoir, which reveals tantalising glimpses of our destination, Inverness. Descending first through woodland, the Great Glen Way reaches this historic highland city along lovely canalside and riverside paths, a fitting end to this outstanding trail right in the heart of the city.
